Free museums popular in China

A total of 1,452 museums and memorial halls are now free to visitors, announced Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage Saturday, adding that visitor numbers have increased since entry fees were dropped.

Currently, large museums draw an average of 3,000 visitors a day while small ones receive about 200 people. The proportion of teenagers, migrant workers, elderly people and low-income residents increased greatly after the freeentry policy was adopted by museums, according to Shan.
"Free museums invite more visitors and support," he said.

China issued a circular in January 2008, requiring all public museums and memorial halls to o. er free admission by the end of 2009, except for some designated to cultural relics and historical sites.
