China Honors film editors in Beijing

    In Beijing, the Chinese Filmmakers Association has honored the most accomplished film editors, including some artists of yesteryear. The awards mark the first major recognition in China for this important role in filmmaking.

    At the awards ceremony, the "Lifetime Achievement Award" went to Fu Zhengyi. The eighty-five year old film editor was behind some of the most popular films in Chinese history, including "A Dream of the Red Mansions" and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms".

    Another eleven veteran editors were honored with "Outstanding Contribution Award". But the younger generation was not to be overshadowed. Wu Fanghai, who edited the 2009 hit "The Founding of a Republic", and others also received special recognition.

    On its most fundamental level, film editing is the art, technique, and practice of assembling shots into a coherent whole. As the film industry develops with great strides in China, film editing has also gone through enormous changes.

    Film editing is often referred to as the "invisible art" because when it is well-practiced, the viewer can become so engaged that he or she is not even aware of the editor's work.

    These winners were grateful that their hard work is gaining more and more appreciation and recognition.
