Honor Lei Feng in China
By admin on 2014-12-23

Honoring the selfless spirit of Communist Party of China and PLA icon Lei Feng (or "the Fengster" as his Western admirers affectionately call him) Liu Guangjian, 54, left Chongqing on November 7 bound for Sichuan Province, his 23rd destination on a solo national tour promoting "Lei Feng spirit." Liu, who is from Pengzhou, Sichuan Province, shines shoes to earn his meals and has already ridden his three-wheeled bike to 110 cities through about 400 counties. A PLA veteran himself from 1971-75 and retired civil servant, Liu typically stays in each city for 10 days and records his experiences in a notebook diary.

He also gets by with a little help from his new Lei Feng friends. In Chongqing's Shapingba district, a man gave him a pair of shoes, a coat and two pairs of trousers and a reporter gave him two bottles of cooking oil.

"He publicizes 'Lei Feng spirit', we learn the spirit to help him," said Gao Ling, a laid-off worker, who boiled Liu pork and helped him wash his clothes.
Lei Feng was an orphan who died in August 1962, when a pole fell on him after a PLA coworker backed a truck into it. He was reputed to have said that his greatest desire in life was to be nothing more than "a revolutionary screw that never rusts."

The "Lei Feng spirit" was exemplified in good deeds like washing his pals' clothes and mending their socks and sending his small savings to the flood victim parents of a fellow soldier.
