Unbelievable: Guangzhou Fails to be Listed in Top Ten Great Cities of Food

Guangzhou, which was always well known for its Cantonese cuisine and snacks, is now defeated in a food competition held by Forbes aiming at selecting the "Top 10 great cities of food". Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai placed separately at seventh, eighth and tenth while Guangzhou was even not on the list, Guangzhou Daily reports.

Some of the representatives from Guangzhou catering business expressed their own opinions.

Voice from the Catering Service Association

Ni Hong, Secretary General of the Guangzhou Catering Service Association, said it was an unofficial selection and the standards were still unknown. The failure may largely come from a lower degree of internationalization of Guangzhou.

Voice from local Chinese uisine industry

According to Zhao Liping, Chief Director of Publicity Office of Guangzhou Restaurant, Guangzhou people value the taste, but not the decoration of the food, which may lead to fail on the list.

Voice from local Western food industry

"I'm not surprised", said Huang Zhidong, Brand Manager of a famous Café in Guangzhou. "Guangzhou is doomed to fail if the competition were based on western food." A saying goes like "Dining in Guangzhou" is based on Chinese Food. As for western food, Guangzhou is no wonder behind Beijing and Shanghai. Moreover, the catering enterprises of Guangzhou are not so united as that in other provinces.

The "Top 10 great cities of food" are Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Mexico, Barcelona, Madrid, Hong Kong, Beijing, Milan and Shanghai.
