Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the preferred therapy for many Cantonese people when they get sick, and most hospitals in Guangzhou, as well as many special TCM clinics, provide this service. Here are some popular recommendations from the locals.

The Best --- Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Guangdong Sheng Zhong Yiyuan in Chinese Pinyin)

Founded in 1933, this hospital is highly regarded and hailed as the best TCM provider in Guangdong province. It was reportedly one of the first TCM hospitals in China.

Generally speaking, the doctors here are professional and responsible. The service is top notch, the medicines are high quality and the prices are reasonable.

The Provincial hospital uses a convenient and efficient network-based computerized registration, which handles doctor visits, billing, prescriptions and treatment. The hospital also mixes and prepares herbal medicines.

This state-run hospital was redecorated and expanded a couple of years ago, thus the ambient environment is above-average and clean.

It is so popular that it is often crowded. Parking is not very convenient due to limited space around the main hospitals in old town or Yuexiu District.
There is also a branch at the heart of Ersha Island, which offers a newer, more spacious and cleaner environment, as well as more available parking spaces. The branch mainly targets the more affluent residents of Tianhe and Ersha Island.

There are also branches at Guangzhou University Town, Fangcun, Tianhe, Luo Chong Wei, Hong Kong and Zhuhai.

Other notable hospitals

Other hospitals are worth mention, including the affiliated hospitals of Sun Sat-sen University, located throughout the city (named by the locals as Zhongshan something Yuan); the Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital (in Dongchuan Lu, east of the China Plaza); Guangzhou Red Cross Hospital (Tongfu Zhong Lu in Haizhu District); and Guangyi Er Hospital (in Changgang Dong Lu, just opposite the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art).

Many of their doctors are professional and trustworthy, especially at the Sun Yat-sen hospitals. But prices are high and medicines vary in quality compared with the Provincial Hospital of TCM. These hospitals are also generally packed with patients.

Special TCM clinics

Some clinics specially provide only TCM prescriptions and treatments. The most well-known is the Guangdong Senior TCM Clinic Group (Guangdong Sheng Gaoji Zhongyi Guan in Chinese Pinyin).

This group of four private downtown clinics, shown below, featuring locally famous full-time and retired veteran doctors. The prescriptions are trustworthy, but fees are high for registration and medicine.
