London Confucius Institute for TCM Held Mandarin Competition to Promote Confucius Institute Online

With the unique melody of Chinese Erhu, four students came up to the stage wearing colorful Chinese Tangzhuang, announcing the opening ceremony of the 2011 Mandarin Competition. From April 6th to 8th 2011, in order to mark the launch of Confucius Institute Online in the UK, the London Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine (CI FOR TCM) and the Confucius Classroom at St Joseph’s College organized a number of schools to participant a spectacular mandarin competition.240 students from St Joseph’s Junior School, St Joseph’s Infant School, All Saints Junior School and St Andrews Junior School joined this competition separately. Head teachers from these four schools and teachers from each class gave fully support for this event. There were a total of four sections for each school’s competition: paper-cutting, handwriting, singing and speaking.


Competitions hosts wore Tangzhuang

At the beginning, four students who wore Tangzhuang announced the competition begin. Jianmei Li, Mandarin volunteer teacher from the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine (CI for TCM) at London south Bank University and the Confucius Classroom at St Joseph's College, sent out brochures for Confucius Institute Online and introduced this free platform to all the students. Miss Li taught her students how to use this website, how to register, and how to learn mandarin by themselves during Easter break. The fabulous online institute attracted all the students’ attention. A lovely panda carton figure in a learning Chinese game cheered up all the students. This increased the competitive atmosphere of the event.

After the introduction, the exciting competition began. During the singing and speaking competition, Miss Li invited the teachers from each class to be judges, which made this competition more engaging. Students’ excellent performance even surprised their teachers. Two tigers, Color Song, Chinese Pinyin Song, these lovely Chinese songs brought happiness to the students, “xia wu hao (good afternoon)” “wo shu long (my Chinese zodiac is dargon)”, “wo shi ying guo ren (I am British)” gave the students increased confidence. By the end of each school’s Mandarin competition, Mandarin teacher Miss Li and the teacher from that class announced the final results for the four sections in the competition. And then they awarded the winners with certificates and gifts from Confucius Institute Online.

All the students and teachers had a wonderful time in the internal Mandarin competition. Ms G. De Rosa, head teacher of St Joseph's Junior School was glad that the students participated in the competitions and complimented the hosts who wore Tangzhuang and all the winners in school assembly. She also thanked Miss Li for organizing this competition. After school, with smiles on their faces, students from different schools brought certificates and prizes back to their home. They shared the enthusiasm with their friends, with their parents, and shared and spread the Chinese culture to everyone.
