A Filipino restaurant at Gulangyu, Xiamen, Fujian

Along FuJian Road福建路 just minutes away by foot from the Catholic Church on Gulangyu Island, you will find a small gate leading to a cosy and welcoming little restaurant.

Chinoy’s Grill is a Filipino restaurant that opened on the 14th of February, 2010 inside one of the housing residents on Fu Jian road. The ceremonial cutting of the ribbon was done by the President of the Filipino Association of Xiamen (FAX), Nick Bonavente.

Once entering the restaurant, one cannot help but think of being home with a friendly welcome at the door, a walk-in dining room, a simple yet cosy atmosphere with a display of photographs by Filipino photographer, Bong Antivola, and a group of people greeting you as they have their meals.

There are choices of Filipino dishes to choose from such as Sinigang, a Filipino tamarind based soup, Chicken or Pork Adobo, a sweet-vinegar-like sauce that is added to the meat and also Sweet & Sour Fish which are amongst the other dishes and BBQ served on the menu.

The purpose of opening the grill is for all the Filipinos to gather after church service for lunch, to chat and just to have fun.

Because Filipinos in general like to sing, there is also a Karaoke machine inside the restaurant for all those who are in the mood for entertaining. 

The word Chinoy is a combination of the word Chinese and Filipinos, as in referring to the Chinese Filipino community.

On Sundays there is always a BBQ with a variety of kebabs or Kaorou on sale for those who wander by.  The grill welcomes all Filipinos as well as tourists and all the famished customers who are eager to try something different.

Prices on the menu such as the kebabs range from 1RMB to 25RMB for the dishes, a reasonable price for those just visiting the island for the day.

To find the Grill, go to the Catholic Church and turn right onto Fujian Road and follow it for 3 minutes until you arrive at building #54.
