Lovers in Xiamen prefer Spring Festival

The atmosphere of Valentine's Day was not so sweet and romantic in Xiamen this year, as many people preferred to stay with families rather than with lovers on February 14.

Spring Festival is a traditional Chinese festival for family reunion and this year's Spring Festival happened to occur on the same day as Valentine's Day which has been celebrated in China for many years.

It is reported that many restaurants haven't even offered special menus for Valentine's Day this year. "This must be the most cheerless Valentine's Day since it has been celebrated in Xiamen. Only a few couples made reservations tonight." said a restaurant owner.

The date of Chinese New Year on the solar calendar changes every year. The two festivals coincided three times last century, in 1915, 1934 and 1953. The next time will be in 2048.
