An exhibition from the Inner Mongolia Museum to go on show

An exhibition from the Inner Mongolia Museum, featuring the largest collection of Class 1 artifacts from China, will open today at the National Palace Museum (NPM).

The organizer of the exhibition said that 115 masterpieces, including treasures from the Liao Tomb on Tuerji Mountain, will be displayed outside of China for the first time.

According to the NPM, the exhibition, titled “Gold and Glory — The Wonders of Khitan from the Inner Mongolia Museum Collection,” will present Liao artifacts and rare wares of gold, silver and other materials, from various tribes on the great steppe, as well as from the three major Khitan grave sites.

Liao artifacts are rare in Taiwan.

“The public in Taiwan could gain an understanding of Liao culture through this new exhibit,” said Chou Kung-hsin, director of the NPM.

The most important item in the exhibit is a gold mask found in the tomb of a Liao princess, which has been viewed by more than a million people in Japan.

In addition, treasures from the Tuerji Mountain tomb, which were discovered in March 2003, will debut at the exhibition.

The organizer indicated that the Tuerji Mountain tomb is currently dated as the earliest of all the Khitan nobility tombs that have been excavated to date.

The many exquisite funerary artifacts include bronzes, silverware, gold ware, lacquer ware, wood carvings, horse gear, glassware and textiles, she said.

The exhibit will run from Feb. 6 to May 16.
