The largest Stamp Auctions to be held in China
By admin on 2014-12-26

Hong Kong is gearing up for one of the largest stamp auctions ever to be held in China with 1,940 lots expected to realize in excess of $5.8 million, according to organizers.

Tomorrow will see the Jane and Dan Sten Olsson Collection Stamps of China, 1885- 1897 go under the hammer, including the rare 1897 Revenue with Small Figures Surcharge $1 on 3c. red, which is considered by InterAsia Auctions as a magnificent example and has a presale estimate of $350,000.

Treasures of the Cultural Revolution, which includes five value pieces such as a large-format Whole Country is Red, will also be for sale. Whole Country is Red was prepared for use but never issued. In the center of the stamp is a red map of China, with workers, peasants and soldiers holding up Mao's little red books. The stamps were minted in 1968 but the large format was rejected as it was too large and mistakes were found on the smaller format.

"The map was drawn based on the wrong version, with an inaccurate line for the border of China, which raised concerns about a possible row between neighboring countries," Wan Weisheng, the designer of Whole Country is Red, was quoted by Xinhua as saying.

A mint condition Whole Country is Red stamp fetched $473,310 last year.
