Harbin Int'l Ice And Snow Festival

Harbin's annual Snow and Ice Festival is now a globally established tourist attraction, with thousands of domestic and foreign visitors. But what exactly is the essence of the festival, and how and why did it all begin? Let's find out more about this annual celebration of all things frozen.

It all started with the athletic spirit of Harbin's people.

In a winter lasting up to five months, ice skating, skiing, swimming, hockey and sleigh riding have long been traditional outdoor activities.

But it's not just about keeping fit. For centuries, sculptors have seen the frozen temperatures as an advantage. They regularly travel thousand miles to craft works of art out of huge chunks of ice, pulled from the local Songhuajiang River.

The Harbin International Snow and Ice Festival was officially launched in 1985, to capitalise on the region's tourism potential.

Nowadays it's established as a regular event, combining winter sports, ice sculpting, architecture, exhibitions, wedding ceremonies, and even trade fairs.

The festival officially lasts one month, subject to weather conditions. It usually opens with a grand ceremony on January 5th, known as "Ice and Snow Day". But there's no closing festival -- the snow and ice fun never really stops, until the spring sun comes around.
