Shanghai Int'l Film Festival Kicks off

Actress Li Bingbing on the red carpet of the SIFF opening ceremony.

The 14th annual Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) kicked off Saturday night with a star-studded celebration unmarred by waves of heavy rain.

Chinese director Feng Xiaogang, winner of the Outstanding Contribution to Chinese-language Film Award, called himself a director who's withstood "a lot of criticism throughout my career" but said he was deeply touched and inspired by the award.

"Sometimes the criticism gets to the point where I ask myself if I really want to continue in this business," Feng said. "But then I receive an award like this and I realize there's no other answer but 'yes'."

The international presence at this year's SIFF stands to be bigger and more prominent than in years past, with such stars as Hollywood actor Matt Dillon, Japanese actor Satoshi Tsumabuki and director Shunji Iwai, and South Korean actress Jeon Ji-hyun all making an appearance on the red carpet, in addition to international media tycoon Rupert Murdoch and his wife Wendi Deng Murdoch.

Other big international names at the opening included Barry Levinson, the Academy Award-winning director of Rain Man, and Best Actress Academy Award-winner Susan Sarandon, also this year's winner of SIFF's Outstanding Contribution to Global Film Art Award.

"I never expected my career could take me to such places as this," Sarandon said.
