Grad Student Sentenced
Pan Jie, a graduate student at a university in Shanghai, was sentenced to five-year imprisonment last week by the Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Court for the death of four and wounding of six others in a car accident earlier this year.
On February 10, Pan drove her Ford coupe to the Pudong International Airport to meet her parents. On the way, she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a road construction crew near the Yanggao South Road exit in Pudong. The accident left four workers dead, two seriously wounded and four with minor injuries.
Surveillance videos of the accident showed there was no obstruction of view and prior vehicles had avoided the site without incident. The court placed Pan at fault as she had enough time to take action.
