Britons in China
Name: Gary Oxley
From: Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
Living in: Xiamen
“However much you learn, you will never truly understand China, but the more you learn about the people and the culture, the more you will want to know!”
Gary originally arrived in China in 2002 as a single man with three suitcases. Seven years later, he has an Australian wife, who he met while she was studying for her second degree in Mandarin Chinese, a daughter, a son, and a growing business.
Working in the construction materials industry, Gary could not resist an opportunity given to him by his employer at the time to come to China and work in a country where vast projects were being started on a regular basis and there were constant innovations in design. He has been involved in a large number of projects, mainly in the airport and transport, leisure and cultural sectors, and all have been on a scale he would have found difficult to imagine before leaving the UK.
In his spare time he is a keen supporter of the newly formed Xiamen Typhoons rugby team, who he hopes will become a key feature of the local community. He has also enjoyed being a tourist in many areas in China. Most of his time in China has been spent in cities where life moves at a fast pace and there is a general feeling of urgency, and he has found this energy invigorating. However, his first visit to more rural China was surprising in how different the pace of life was, demonstrating the contrast between urban and rural life and the link between communities and their history.
