Putting Qingdao on the world happiness map
Science teacher and travel documentary maker Brendan Madden is hoping to put his current hometown of Qingdao, Shangdong Province, on the world happiness map. Madden has been selected as a finalist in Expedition 206, a worldwide adventure aimed at capturing happiness from all angles and sharing it around the globe.
Selected from thousands of happiness-spreading hopefuls, the 31-year-old Madden and his two teammates are down to the final nine people for a chance of a life time, with online voting for the adventure on www.expedition206.com, closing tomorrow.
“I am actually really happy everyday of my life,” Madden laughed. “Everyday I ride my bicycle to work along Qingdao’s seashore, I get to teach some great kids and I find everyday amazing, I love enjoying life!”
His positive attitude and view on the world may see him embark on a quest through 206 countries.
“We will find what makes people happy around the world,” Madden explained. “Maybe we will be having dinner with a farming family in Uganda and the mother will come out with some great home cooked food and a beautiful smile on her face, then that’s the happiness I hope to capture.”
Madden grew up in Washington DC and lived in Seattle before moving to Beijing to teach science to middle schoolers. Now a resident in Qingdao, he also plays in a rock band and shoots travel films for Lonely Planet and various independent production houses.
Madden was selected by Expedition 206 organizers to apply for the happiness ambassador position. Ignition, an Atlanta-based family company organizing the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Torch Relay, was behind the selection process, which now sees three teams of three vying to get to the final stage. Public vote will decide the result, with Madden calling for support on the website www.expedition206.com to help him take the happiness from Qingdao to the world.
“Happiness in the world can easily be found,” he says. “I see it all around me in Qingdao; it would be such a great opportunity to take my experiences in China to the rest of the world and then to come back and share my travels with everyone here.”
