- Is China the undisputed leader in combating climate change?

United Nations Climate Change Conference leader Christina Figueres told media in November 2015 that compared to the US and other countries, China has taken “undisputed leadership” in combating climate change. To emphasize the matter further, she noted that “the United States is actually playing catch up to China”.

During the June 2 Sustainable Energy Forum CEIBS will welcome the China Delegate for the United Nations Climate Change Summit Mr Li Haiyan to discuss the goals for China following the historic ‘Paris COP21’ global agreement to combat climate change.

Experts from the renewable energy industry and new energy vehicle industry who are expected to join the June 2 discussions about China’s transformation to a low-carbon economy include President of Trina New Energy Investment Mr. Huang Longxing, Marketing Director of Dongfeng Nissan Venucia Business Department Mr. Kaiser Lin, and CEO & Founder of Clean Energy Associates Mr. Andy Klump.

“When it comes to China and climate change, many people first think of its greenhouse gas emissions. As the factory of the world and large population, it is natural that China has the highest total emissions. However the true metric for evaluating China comes from the nation’s aggressive actions in controlling rising emissions,” said Jesse Miller (MBA2017), President of CEIBS MBA Energy and Environment Club.

As the Chinese economy shifts towards a cleaner, more sustainable development model Miller highlighted many interesting developments, including plans to implement a nationwide carbon cap and trade system, renewable energy investment in 2015 that exceeded both the US and Europe combined, and over a dozen new energy vehicle start-ups established and backed by Chinese tech giants such as Tencent, Baidu, JD.com and LeEco.
